The head of the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), Michael Dugher, has implored the administration to offer financial aid to gambling houses if they are affected by any fresh COVID-19 limitations.
Dugher highlighted that casinos are a crucial component of the hospitality sector and requested that Chancellor Rishi Sunak provide a comparable economic rescue package for businesses, especially in hospitality, as was given during the confinements.
“Gambling establishments are a significant contributor to the UK economy and an essential part of the hospitality industry,” Dugher stated.
Dugher added that any restrictions would have a “substantial effect” on casinos.
“Following 18 months of adversity, they have begun to rebound from various limitations, including extended closures and travel bans, but they are understandably worried that further restrictions over Christmas and New Year will have a considerable impact on their recovery.”
The BGC reports that the UK’s 120 gambling houses currently employ approximately 11,600 individuals, pay £600 million in taxes and contribute £1.2 billion to the economy.
Dugher stated that gambling establishments are merely seeking “guarantees” should additional limitations be implemented.
“Casinos, similar to numerous other enterprises within the hospitality sector, are simply pursuing assurances that they will receive complete backing from the government if the pandemic necessitates more stringent regulations.”
BGC members detailed their corporate social responsibility objectives in their 2021 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, unveiled earlier today, encompassing engagement with local communities and minimizing their environmental footprint.
