The new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has retained Michelle Donelan as the leader of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport department.

Donelan was appointed to this role last month by Sunak’s predecessor, Liz Truss, succeeding Nadine Dorries, who had held the position since September 2021 under Boris Johnson.

Sunak was officially appointed Prime Minister yesterday (October 25), almost immediately after Truss resigned, and promptly began assembling his new team.

Donelan was declared as one of a small number of ministers who would keep their positions, while others departed following Truss’s exit.

Prior to this, Donelan served as the head of the Education department for a brief period in July 2022, and before that, she was in charge of higher education from September 2021 to July 2022.

As the head of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport department, Donelan will continue to oversee the government’s review of the 2005 Gambling Act.

In 2020, the government initiated an examination of the Gambling Act, seeking public feedback, which concluded in March 2021. The subsequent step was a comprehensive report, but this has been postponed several times due to changes in the government and the Gambling Commission.

With the report’s release just a few weeks off, Truss declared her departure from office. Although the precise date of the document’s unveiling remains undisclosed, the recent shift in leadership might result in additional postponements.
