The Italian Federal Prosecutor’s Office has prohibited Juventus player Nicolo Fagioli from participating in football for seven months due to his involvement in unlawful wagering on football matches.

Fagioli was accused of placing wagers through an unauthorized gambling platform. Italian Football Federation (FIGC) regulations stipulate that athletes discovered to have bet on matches can face a suspension of up to three years.

Two other Italian national team players, Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo, have been revealed to be under scrutiny and have been removed from the national team.

According to the FIGC, Fagioli has reached an accord with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office. This aligns with Article 126 of the CGS, which permits those under investigation to request a reduced penalty. Fagioli will also be assessed a fine of €12,500 (£10,849/$13,239).

Further reports today (October 17) assert that Tonali’s representative, Giuseppe Riso, confirmed that Tonali has a gambling dependence. The Times’ lead football writer, Henry Winter, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that Riso stated Tonali “is taken aback, he is deeply remorseful.”

Based on accounts, Riso stated: “The organization supports Sandro, he’s engaged in his most crucial contest – against gaming dependence.” Riso addressed the Italian diplomatic mission in London.

Juventus Football Club recently submitted a document to the Italian Football Federation concerning Fagioli’s betting practices.

The Italian Football Federation declared that Fagioli breached Article 24 of the CGS, which forbids football players and members of football clubs from “placing wagers on football matches organized by the Italian Football Federation, UEFA and FIFA.”

Fagioli was officially prohibited for 12 months, with a 5-month reduction to permit “alternative remedies.” This indicates that Fagioli will be obligated to undergo at least 6 months of therapy.

He must also present himself 10 times at amateur sports organizations, federal regional centers, and gaming dependence recovery centers.

The Italian Football Federation stated that the Federal Prosecutor’s Office will supervise the arrangement, adding that the arrangement could be terminated if Fagioli breaks it.

The Italian Football Federation declared: “The Federal Prosecutor’s Office will guarantee adherence to the instructions, and if violated, will take actions within its authority, in accordance with the CGS, to end the arrangement and continue disciplinary proceedings before the Sports Justice Authority.”
